Northwest Airlines's Pet Travel Policy
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates air transportation of pets and all airlines are required by law to follow the guidelines outlined on our Air Travel Regulations for Pets page. Individual airlines may impose further restrictions or fees for flying with your pet. Northwest Airlines's pet policy is described below.

Pets in the Cabin:
Small dogs may travel as carry-on luggage, in addition to the carry-on allowance for your flight. Your pet's carrier must fit comfortable under the seat. The combined weight of your dog and carrier cannot exceed 15 pounds and the maximum dimensions of the carrier are 17"x12.3"x8". Northwest does not allow pets in cabin to several destinations, including Hawaii, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. Aircraft restrictions that limit the number of pets onboard individual flights also apply.
If you'd like to bring your pet onboard, inform Northwest when you make your reservation and call again at least 24 hours prior to your flight to confirm that your pet is traveling with you. Northwest Airlines reserves the right to access a $20 gate processing fee for pets not disclosed prior to boarding.
There is an $80.00 USD fee per carrier on flights within the 48 Contiguous United States, Alaska, and Canada.
Pets Checked with Baggage:
You may transport your dog as checked luggage on your same flight, in addition to the luggage allowance for your flight. The dog must be under 100 pounds and 160 inches (with carrier) for domestic travel and 150 pounds and 160 inches (with carrier) for international travel. Northwest flight series numbers 2000-9699 may not accept animals as luggage.
If you'd like your pet to travel with you as checked luggage, you need to let the agent know when you make your reservation and call Northwest again 24 hours prior to your flight to confirm that your pet is traveling with you. On the day of your flight, check-in with your pet at the Northwest ticket counter at least two hours prior to flight and claim your pet at the Northwest luggage claim area, 1-2 hours after arrival.
If you plan to transfer to another airline, you will need to allow time to claim your animal and re-check it with the connecting airline. To ensure that your pet will be transported to your final destination on another airline, please remember to check their pet policy as well.
For pets as checked luggage, the fee ranges from $139 to $359 each way per carrier depending on weight.
