Branson is known as the Live Country Music Capital of the World, and can be described as a mini Vegas without casinos. Every year, more than seven million retirees, families and RVers head to Branson for some good, clean fun. And it certainly isn't hard to find.
Branson is home to close to 50 music theaters where you can listen to country, pop, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and rock music from big-name entertainers. Besides live music, there are also dinner shows, comedy shows, magic shows, theme parks, and a good selection of quirky museums. There's even a ventriloquist show with talking dogs aboard the 700-seat Showboat Branson Belle. Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed in Branson's theaters, so your pooch can't see his comrades perform on the boat. Still, Branson is an excellent choice for travelers with pets because of its close proximity to three lakes and the many other outdoor activities available in this region of the Ozarks.
So when you want to get your dog out of the hotel room, head to nearby Table Rock Lake. With almost 750 miles of shoreline, this beautiful lake is most famous for its world-class bass fishing, but it is also excellent for boating, water-skiing, canoeing, swimming, and much more. You can rent a boat for the day (or half day), and get a fishing license and tackle, from any of the local marinas if you want to get out on the water. But, even without a boat, the area fun to explore. Try the nature trail near the Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery for excellent access to both hiking and fishing on the lake.
When you're in Branson with your dog, take him to the Stone Hill Winery. It's the oldest and most prestigious winery in Missouri. Every fifteen minutes, they offer a free half-hour guided tour through their naturally cooled underground cellars where you can witness the wine-making process. Short on time? No worries. They also let guests head straight to the tasting rooms.
Dogs aren't allowed in the tasting rooms or on the guided tour, but with a leash, they are welcome to lounge on the vine-covered patio. It has a fantastic view of the vineyards and town below, so you'll want to sit awhile and enjoy it with the pooch. Stop by the gift shop for some cheese and a bottle of wine and it'll be even more relaxing. If you want to really treat your dog, get a sausage too!
The Stone Hill Winery is located on Highway 165 and Green Mountain Drive, just two blocks south of The Strip. Open Monday through Saturday 8:30am to dusk; Sunday 11am to 6pm. Call 1-800-909-WINE for more information.
