Asheville, North Carolina is a pet-friendly city in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains that has been a popular tourist destination for the rich and famous since the 1880s. Asheville has been dubbed the "Paris of the South" for its strong arts community and cultural attractions, its beautiful setting, and its wealth of historic properties like the famed Biltmore Estate.
Asheville's historic downtown is brimming with unique shops, art galleries, museums, restaurants and live entertainment venues, all set in impressive Art Deco buildings from the 1920s. To explore the downtown area with your dog, go for a walk on the Asheville Urban Trail. It's a 1.7-mile walking tour that showcases Asheville's rich history and distinctive architecture.
For something a little more strenuous, you won't have to venture far. The countryside surrounding Asheville has more outdoor activities to offer than nearly any other destination in the Southeast. Drive just a few miles outside of town, and you'll be on one of America's most popular touring routes - the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can take in mile after mile of incredible views from the comfort of your car, or get out and explore on foot for close-up views of the lush forests, beautiful wildflowers, and breathtaking waterfalls that are just a short distance off the parkway. There are more than a hundred hiking trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway and leashed dogs are allowed on every one of them!
As you'd probably expect, pets aren't allowed inside Biltmore House or the other estate buildings such as the winery and restaurants. However, pets are allowed all over the grounds! Just keep your dog leashed while you're in the estate, and he'll be able to enjoy the magnificent gardens and explore miles of wooded trails with you.
Stop by the Explore Biltmore Estate Outdoor Center to get a trail map before you head out, and bring plenty of water for the pooch. If you're not sure what trail to try, ask the staff at the Outdoor Center. They are very friendly and can suggest the best trail based on your interests and level of ability. Our favorite is the Bass Pond Trail that begins at the footbridge to the boathouse. Keep an eye out for beavers!
Unfortunately, you are required to pay an admission fee to enjoy the estate's outdoor activities even if you don't tour Biltmore House. Tickets are $45.00 for adults and $22.50 for kids age 6 to 16. Dogs and children under 6 are free! And if you arrive after 3pm, you'll be given a free pass for the next day as well.
