We walked from rillto (sp) to country club bridge and back. Clean, well maintained walkway that didn’t get too hot (it was 80-ish out). Lots of bikers but they are good about getting around walkers. Highly recommend for a nice walk. Bring water and poop back!

I traveled along the trail on the south side and then went into the river-but after about 20 mins, my dog started whimpering because the sand was too hot for her paws :( I carried her back to the shade, and we proceeded to walk (on-leash) back along the south side trail until we reached my car. Lots of broken glass, I was grateful than neither my dog nor I ended up with cuts as a result.
The river is a good place to let your dog off-leash (if they can be maintained by voice control), but my long-haired dog was simply miserable.

I mostly take my pup down into the river(it's normally dry). She loves it. If you're dog is OK off leash it's the best. I've run into many other dogs and their people and never had a problem. Tucson is horrible, in my opinion, for taking dogs out so the river is quite refreshing. Lots of wildlife to chase, not much cactus at all. I've only seen a rattlesnake once, saw a pair of coyotes and a single coyote once. I prefer east of 1st Ave, it's nice walking all the way east of Craycroft. Also dog parks at Dodge Blvd and halfway between Alvernon & Swan. Craycroft to Swan there is a dirt path just off the cycling/jogging path. Water at 1st Ave- N. side, Tucson Blvd- park S. side, dog parks, Swan and Craycroft- N. side. Sometimes the fountains are broken/frozen in winter.

I suggest staying on the south side of the river as most bike riders seem to ride on the north side. There is a lot of variety and always friendly people on the walk. Lots of watering holes and they even have poop bag stations for those who forget to bring their own (but why would you??). I confess to going in the middle of the week when there are not very many people around and taking my dog into the wash to let her run off leash; it's a good workout for both of us. But, I ALWAYS keep her on a leash when on the paths. We once came across a rattlesnake all coiled up in the middle of the path, right around a bend, so now we are very careful at every blind spot. But, it is still my favorite place to go for a quick imprompto, almost-out-in-the-desert sort of hike/walk.
